Last month Colchester Indoor Bowls Club encountered Turpins of Saffron Walden in a County League first division match, and Woods Bowls Club was well represented by Grahame Walkingshaw and Peter Pushman who were both selected.
On the 3 home rinks CIBC won all three games with a shot count of 81 to 44. The away rinks produced a mixed bag of results, with one tied game and a win for each team. The away leg shot count favoured Turpins by 63-60. The overall shot count was won by CIBC, 141-107. Thus, CIBC were winners by 9.5-3.5. An excellent victory, and well done to both members.
The full results are below.
On the first home rink CIBC skip Elliot Mann, playing with Geoff King, Kevin Smith and Peter Pushman were up against R. Searle, and his team Andy Wells, Mark Dovaston and Steve Lesslie. The home side led 8-3 after 6 ends, and then 14-7 after 11. Despite losing 6 of the last 10 ends the CIBC lads ran out comfortable 24-13 winners.
Home skip Ian Harris had Mark Garrett, Roland Harden and Tony Wilson on board, while Turpins Mick Harvey played with Steve Murphy, Mike Armsworth and Nick Dykes. After 4 ends the scores were 4-4. CIBC led 12-8 after 11 ends but Turpins got a 6 on the next end to lead 14-12. On the 16th end CIBC went back into the lead, 17-15 but lost it again on the 17th, 17-18 to the hosts. CIBC then cruised the last 4 ends, winning the game, 25-18.
Dan Rodger had Peter Leatherdale, Grahame Walkingshaw and Dave Hunt in his team. Turpins skip Jim Kennedy played with Neil Whitehead, Nigel Bailey and Robin Waterhouse. The hosts restricted the visitors to scoring on just 3 of the first 10 ends, for CIBC to lead 17-7. Turpins only won 4 of the last 11 ends and CIBC had a comfortable 32-13 win.
Away from home CIBC skip Mitchell Springett had in his team Brian Finney, Ian Reeves and Graham Heard. The teams were tied at 6-6 after 6 ends. CIBC went behind but got back on level terms at the 15th end, 13-13. After slipping behind again, CIBC had a good 18th end and led 18-14. Turpins then had two winning ends to snatch the lead back, 19-18 to Turpins. However, two shots on the final end were enough for CIBC to win 20-19.
CIBC skip Darren Dellar and his team, Brian Smith, Nigel Jenner and James Coleman were on the back foot from the start. Turpins led 20-6 after 10 ends and then 24-10 after 15. The CIBC then staged an impressive fight back to win the next 5 ends and trail by only 3 shots going into the final end. Unfortunately, Turpins won the end and the game 25-21.
Andy Smith had in his team, Robin Piggott, Marti Hogg and Tom Smith. They were up against Turpins skip K. Moore. CIBC were quickest out the blocks and led 9-2 after 7 ends. The hosts were struggling finding themselves down 3-12 after 11 ends. On the next end they got a 5, lost three more ends then got a 5 then a 4. Thus, after 17 ends the hosts led 17-14. CIBC won 2 of the final 4 ends to earn a hard fought 19-19 tie.
